Who are Horizon Leisure?
Horizon Leisure is a leisure centre and gym facility serving the local community in Waterlooville. With a steady flow of members and visitors throughout the day, the site required a modern and reliable speed gate solution to control access while maintaining a welcoming, professional appearance that aligned with the internal design of the gym.
What Challenge Did Horizon Leisure Face?
Before the project began, Horizon Leisure had no controlled entrance in place, allowing users to walk freely into the facility without authorisation. This created security and operational concerns, particularly during busy periods, as staff had no way of monitoring or managing entry. The absence of a structured speed gate access control system meant the site lacked accountability, visibility, and consistent control over who was accessing the gym.
What Were UK Turnstiles’ Goals for This Project?
Our goal was to design and install a secure and efficient speed gate system that fit within the available space and complemented the gym’s existing interior design. A key requirement was to provide a temporary solution using a floorplate, as Horizon planned to upgrade its internal entrance in the future. This meant the speed gate turnstiles needed to be installed without permanent fixings so they could be relocated later. The system also needed to provide inclusive access, with both lanes catering for DDA requirements, while operating autonomously without the need for staff supervision.
Project Breakdown
The project involved the installation of a twin UKT-29 speed gate turnstile system, with both lanes set at 900mm wide to fully support DDA access. A bespoke floorplate was supplied to allow for a non-permanent installation, ensuring flexibility for future building works. The solution was designed as a temporary security speed gate setup, with plans for a more permanent configuration once the main reception upgrades are completed. All works were carried out during out-of-hours evening shifts between 10:30pm and 3:00am, enabling a smooth and discreet speed gate installation without disrupting members or staff.
Timeline
The installation was completed on Thursday 29th May. By completing the work overnight, we were able to deliver a fully operational turnstile speed gate solution within a single installation window, allowing Horizon Leisure to reopen as normal the following day with improved access control in place.
