In practice the process runs in three stages: detection at the boundary, verification, then response. Detection may come from video analytics on a camera, a fence-mounted sensor, an infrared beam or a buried cable. When something is picked up the signal is passed to the alarm receiving centre, where an operator looks at the live view and judges whether it is a genuine intrusion, an animal, or simply weather. Only verified events are escalated, and that is what keeps false alarms and unnecessary call-outs down.

Verified response matters commercially as well as operationally. Police forces give priority to alarms that have been confirmed by an operator, and insurers frequently ask what arrangements are in place. Using a centre certified to NSI Gold gives an independent benchmark for how it is run, and the National Security Inspectorate publishes the standards it audits against.

Audio warnings are often the most effective element of a scheme. An operator who can speak directly through a loudspeaker will usually move someone on long before a patrol could reach the site, and the recorded footage is retained in case it is needed afterwards.

Perimeter monitoring works best alongside the physical measures already on the ground, such as fencing, gate lines, lighting and turnstiles, because those create the delay that gives a response time to take effect. It is worth walking the boundary after dark as well as in daylight, since blind spots and glare are rarely obvious during a daytime survey.
