Who are Long Hill College?
At Long Hill College in Cambridge, we worked on behalf of Sure Building & Construction Ltd to deliver a modern and reliable speed gate solution for the school’s entrance. The college is a busy educational environment with large numbers of students moving through the site daily. Our aim was to provide a secure and aesthetically pleasing speed gate system that could manage peak-time egress, while maintaining safety and efficiency.
What Challenge Did Long Hill College Face?
Before our installation, the college had no entrance control solution in place, meaning there was no way to monitor or manage who was on site. This created operational and security concerns, especially during busy periods when students were entering and leaving the premises. The college needed a system that provided reliable speed gate access control without compromising appearance or functionality, while handling high student volumes.
What Were Our Goals for This Project?
Our goal was to design and install a secure, high-capacity speed gate system that complemented the college’s entrance aesthetically and could handle peak-time student traffic efficiently. We wanted to ensure the system included a DDA-compliant lane and four standard lanes to manage demand while integrating seamlessly with the client’s existing access control software. The solution needed to operate fully autonomously, with turnstile speed gate technology ensuring smooth and secure access, while remaining fail-safe in case of emergencies or fire alarm activations.
Project Breakdown
The project involved the installation of a bespoke five-lane UKT-29 speed gate turnstiles system spanning 5.2 meters. One lane was DDA-compliant and four were standard lanes, carefully sized to maintain smooth student flow. We fabricated a custom floorplate to house the speed gates without drilling into the existing flooring, preserving the site’s finishes and allowing a secure, durable installation. All turnstiles were pre-installed with the customer’s access control, providing a fully integrated access control speed gates solution. This bespoke speed gate installation allowed the college to efficiently manage high footfall while maintaining a modern, professional entrance.
Timeline
The installation was completed over three days, from 8th to 10th October 2024. Our team worked efficiently to complete the speed gate turnstile system on schedule, ensuring that the college could immediately benefit from enhanced security and access management.

Results
The completed installation gave Long Hill College a secure and fully controlled entry and exit system that allows the school to manage who is on site and deters unauthorised access. The system is fail-safe and integrated with the fire alarm system, so any loss of power or fire alarm triggers allows the gates to hold open, increasing safety for students and staff.
