What Challenge Did They Face?
The Wheeler Main Entrance previously had an uncontrolled access point, with visitors entering through a manned reception area. The university wanted to introduce a modern school access control solution that would automate entry while improving security and the overall user experience.
One of the biggest challenges was fitting two triple-lane speed gates into the existing entrance without requiring additional infill panels or major alterations to the surrounding structure. Achieving a clean, integrated finish was just as important as the functionality of the system itself.
What Were UK Turnstiles’ Goals for This Project?
Our objective was to design and install a solution that maximised the available space while delivering reliable, automated access control.
To achieve this, we needed to:
- Install two sets of triple-lane UKT-29 turnstile gates.
- Create bespoke gate openings to suit the existing entrance.
- Pre-install the university’s access control hardware before arriving on site.
- Minimise disruption by completing the installation within two working days.
- Deliver a professional college access control system that could support the university’s day-to-day operations.
Project Breakdown
Before installation began, we carefully measured the available space and manufactured bespoke openings to ensure each lane fitted perfectly within the existing layout. This allowed us to avoid the need for infill panels, creating a much cleaner and more professional finish.
To reduce installation time on site, we pre-installed the university’s access control hardware directly into each gate before delivery. This preparation enabled us to complete commissioning more efficiently while reducing disruption to the university’s operations.
The finished installation consisted of two sets of triple-lane UKT-29 speed gates, providing controlled access while maintaining a welcoming entrance for students, staff and authorised visitors.

The complete installation was successfully delivered within two working days, allowing the university to begin using its new entrance system with minimal disruption.
